Summary

IN SOME PARTS OF THE SOVIET UNION, NATURAL COLD CAN BE USED IN POTATO STORES FOR UP TO 8 1/2 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR. BUT WITH ACTIVE VENTILATION THERE ARE THE PROBLEMS OF HEAT FROM THE INSTALLATION AND OF DRYING OUT. THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES A 10,000-TONNE STORE WHERE MAIN AIR DUCTS AND THE VENTILATION PLANT HAVE BEEN INSTALLED OUTSIDE. FOUR RADIAL-FLOW FANS WERE INSTALLED INSIDE AND 4 AXIAL-FLOW FANS WERE INSTALLED OUTSIDE. TWO MAIN AIR DUCTS WERE INSTALLED OUTSIDE, ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE BUILDING. HUMIDITY OF 100% WAS OBTAINED WITH THE SYSTEM. WEIGHT LOSSES WERE NO MORE THAN 1 TO 1. 5%, BUT REACHED 20% AFTER THE START OF MAY. M. C.
