An alternative refrigerant to R502 for low temperature applications.

Author(s) : AGARWAL R., AGARWAL R. S.

Summary

Some alternatives to R502, viz. R507, R404a, HFE-125, M3a, M3b, M3c, R408a and mixtures of (R134a-R290-R22) have been proposed in literature. These mixtures are compatible with polyester oil which are hygroscopic in nature. The paper proposes a ternary mixture of (HFC-134a:HCFC-22/HC-290) which is basically based on HCFC-22. HCFCs are still available and are allowed to be used in Article 5 countries till 2030. Different tests have been carried out. The results have been reported in a suitable tabular and graphical form, which indicate better performance of the appliances using the proposed mixture in comparison to R502.
