An examination of hydrocarbon mixtures for use in high temperature heat pump applications.

Summary

Hydrocarbon mixtures appear promising as replacement fluids, especially since alternative HFCs still remain in the development stage. A cycle simulation is used to examine the potential of a number of hydrocarbon fluids and their mixtures. The cycle simulation includes a compressor model developed using experimental data from a heat pump test facility. The fluids examined include mixtures of propane, cyclobutane, i-butane, n-butane, i-pentane and n-pentane. Where large temperature gradients occur in the source and sink, significant levels of improvement in the COP could be achieved by using wide boiling mixtures.
