Summary

THE USE OF UNDERGROUND STORAGE OF LNG AT 111 K (-162 DEG C) PRESENTS NEW GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THE SOIL AROUND THE TANK, THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF FROZEN SOIL AND THE EVALUATION OF THE PRESSURE OF THE FROZEN SOIL. DESCRIPTION OF TWO SORTS OF TESTS CARRIED OUT FOR EVALUATING THAT PRESSURE IN A COHERENT RIGID SOIL, FOR CHECKING A CALCULATED PRESSURE WHICH HAD BEEN ASSUMED FOR THE FIRST UNDERGROUND TANK FOR LNG STORAGE IN JAPAN. THE CONTROL STUDY COMPRISES A PRELIMINARY LABORATORY TEST AND SUBSEQUENT FIELD TEST ON A MODEL TANK. (Bibliogr. int. IFP-CNRS, FR., 84-T 230-4028.
