Summary

IT IS AN ADVANTAGE FROM A THERMAL STORAGE VIEWPOINT IF THE HEAT STORAGE CAN BE ALLOWED TO FREEZE, BUT SUCH FREEZING CAN RESULT IN THE CLAY ADJACENT TO THE PIPES LOSING ITS STRENGTH FREEZING ALSO CAUSES LOCAL CHANGES IN PORE PRESSURE AROUND THE PIPES, AND POSSIBLY ALSO WITHIN AND OUTSIDE THE AREA OF THE STORAGE. A COMPLICATED ANALYSIS IS NEEDED IN ORDER TO ASCERTAIN THE EFFECTS. FURTHER RESEARCH IS NECESSARY. COMPUTER MODELLING HAS BEEN APPLIED TO INVESTIGATE THE FREEZING PROCESS AROUND A BRINE PIPE IN ORDER TO OBTAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE FREEZING MECHANISMS. VARIOUS WATER CONTENTS IN THE CLAY OF THE STORAGE HAVE BEEN ASSUMED AND POWER EXTRACTION RATES HAVE BEEN VARIED.
