An inquiry into new ammonia resistant potting materials.

Summary

Fully or semi-hermetic compressors often used within refrigeration systems have certain advantages over the open design. However, the refrigerant is in direct contact with the coil windings of the motor and the corrosive effect of ammonia usually leads to the destruction of any connected copper or brass parts. The application of fully encapsulated coils, in combination with the high discharge temperatures of NH3, concludes so far in failures due to thermal overload. Recently an acid-resistant potting is made available on the market. If this also turns out to be resistant to the alkaline action of NH3, it could find an application in semi-hermetic compressors. In this paper tests considering material compatibility as well as an experimental system for lifetime analysis are presented.
