Design and operating experience of large ammonia systems with small refrigerant charge.
Progettazione ed esperienza operativa dei grandi sistemi ad ammoniaca con piccole cariche di refrigerante./ Design and operating experience of large ammonia systems with small refrigerant charge.

Summary
The phase-out of CFCs and the restrictions on use of HCFCs and HFCs in Europe have resulted in a significant increase in the use of ammonia in most European countries. Several valuable lessons have been learned in this process, but it is clear that there is greater scope for the use of ammonia in areas traditionally served by halocarbons. A key to the deployment of ammonia systems in these markets is the reduction of refrigerant charge to the lowest level consistent with long term reliable and efficient operation. This paper will challenge designers to reappraise established habits in the light of technical, commercial and legal developments. Some of these have prompted greater use of ammonia, but others could be seen as threats to established practice. They can only be addressed by adapting current practice, or in some cases abandoning it completely. This cannot be done carelessly: it requires careful planning.
