Summary
Over the last decade there has been increasing market pull for supermarket refrigeration systems with lower environmental impact refrigerants. A solution which has gained much attention is the use of direct expansion carbon dioxide for both low temperature and medium temperature application. As these systems require much higher pressures than conventional systems, entirely new components are needed. The development and qualification of these components requires new capabilities to be put in place in order to ensure system reliability, availability, and lifetime operation, which are critical to long term acceptance of these new systems. In addition to these factors, the cost differences between traditional systems and high pressure CO2 systems has required the components in these systems to migrate from industrial to more commercial in nature. This paper will discuss the facilities put in place in Mainz, Germany, as a crucial part of the development of a range of CO2 commercial refrigeration systems. These facilities include compressor benchmarking and qualification, gas cooler evaluation, evaporator and display cabinet development and cost optimization, valve performance validation and qualification, and full system and controls validation. The use of these facilities as well as of some of the lessons learned as part of their operation will be discussed.
