Summary

Smart grids and district heating/cooling are the main solutions towards a more sustainable world. In this frame, the energy production from renewable sources is necessary. However, de-coupling energy demand from production is one of the most critical aspects to deal with. According to literature, a potential solution is the use of storage tanks coupled with heat pumps. Many optimization studies cover this topic; however, the majority of the works are based on complex algorithms that optimize a specific application and most of them for a given size of the components. Hence, missing the real understanding of the problem. In this work, the analysis of the binomial storage tank-heat pump sizing relationship has been studied. The objective of this work is to understand the behavior and interaction of both components in order to obtain valid and more general design solutions for a wide range of operating conditions.
