Summary

FREEZING INJURY HAD BEEN CAUSED ARTIFICIALLY IN VINE CANES OF VITIS VINIFERA BY LIQUID NITROGEN SPRAYED AT THE TIME IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE SWELLING OF BUDS. THE ACTIVITY OF THE CAMBIUM LOCATED BELOW A BUD WAS CONCOMITANT WITH THE GROWTH OF A SHOOT FROM THIS BUD. IN THE CANE, THE CELLS OF THE UNDAMAGED ADJACENT CAMBIUM GREW OVER THE DEAD XYLEME. WHEN THE INJURY WAS EXTENSIVE, THE LIVING CELLS OF THE PHLOEM ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE RECOVERY OF THE CANE.
