Summary

POWDER X-RAY STUDIES WERE CARRIED OUT ON THIS COMPOUND IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE 4.5 TO 293 K. A SHARP ANOMALY IN LINEAR EXPANSIVITIES (SHOWING AN ESSENTIAL ANISOTROPY) HAS BEEN OBSERVED ACROSS THE TEMPERATURE INTERVAL WHERE THE SUPERCONDUCTING TRANSITION OCCURS. THE EFFECTIVE VOLUME INCREMENT ACROSS THE ANOMALY AS RELATED TO THE RHOMBOHEDRIC CELL AMOUNTS TO AROUND 0. 4%. NEAR CRITICAL TEMPERATURE, AN UNUSUAL TEMPERATURE VARIATION OF THE WIDTHS OF CERTAIN REFLEXES IS FOUND WHICH MIGHT BE ASCRIBED TO SPACE MODULATED POSITIONS OF THE OXYGEN ATOMS IN INTERBARIUM PLANES.
