ANOTHER VIEW ON 2 REFRIGERANTS: A VAST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HCFC123 AND HCFC22.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE HCFCS 123 AND 22 HAVE BEEN CLASSED TOGETHER AND SCHEDULED FOR PHASE OUT BY THE YEAR 2030 BY THE US CLEAN AIR ACT OF 19 THE AUTHOR ARGUES THAT ALTHOUGH HCFC22 HAS A SLIGHTLY HIGHER OZONE DEPLETION POTENTIAL AND HIGHER GLOBAL WARMING POTENTIAL, IN PRACTICE IT IS THE LESS HAZARDOUS REFRIGERANT. THE ARGUMENT IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT HCFC123 IS TO BE A CENTRIFUGAL CHILLER REFRIGERANT WHERE CHARGE SIZE AND PURGE NECESSITY PRODUCE HIGHER LOSS TO ATMOSPHERE THAN HCFC22, WHICH IS USED MAINLY IN HERMETICALLY SEALED SYSTEMS.
