Summary

R-22 flooded chillers have been a mainstay for industrial process refrigeration applications for many years. As ozone depleting substances are phased out and the drive for efficient solutions with lower global warming potential becomes an industry wide focus, owners of existing well-maintained R-22 systems find themselves with limited options. Existing azeotropic or single component fluids fall short of R-22 performance in retrofit scenarios. Additionally, the advantages of the flooded evaporator design can quickly be negated when refrigerant selections diverge from single component or azeotropic fluids. This paper explores the zeotropic refrigerant blend R-449A as a retrofit solution in R-22 chillers with flooded evaporators. Field trial performance data is combined with system modelling to show R-449A as a viable retrofit solution.
