APPLICATIONS DU FROID ET DE LA LYOPHILISATION AU TRAITEMENT DES BIENS CULTURELS.

Author(s) : AMOIGNON J.

Summary

FREEZE-DRYING IS USED FOR THE PRESERVATION OF CULTURAL WORKS IN THREE FIELDS: THE PREPARATION OF PLANTS OR ANIMALS TO BE DISPLAYED IN MUSEUMS ; THE SALVAGING OF ACCIDENTALLY WET BOOKS, MAGAZINES AND DOCUMENTS ; THE TREATMENT OF ARCHEOLOGICAL OBJECTS FROM DIGS IN HUMID OR AQUATIC AREAS. THE ARTICLES SOAKED WITH WATER ARE PLAITED OR WOVEN FIBRES, BONES, SKINS AND PARTICULARLY WOOD. THE ARCHEOLOGICAL WORKS, SOME OF WHICH DATE FROM THE MESOLITHIC ERA, HAVE VERY DELICATE STRUCTURES. ONCE IN CONTACT WITH THE ATMOSPHERE THEY DETERIORATE VERY QUICKLY AND FREEZE-DRYING IS ONE WAY OF DRYING THEM WHILST PRESERVING THEIR NATURE. THUS THEY MAY BE STUDIED AND PRESERVED FOR THE LONGEST POSSIBLE TIME.
