Application of the capacity controlled scroll compressor in refrigeration.
Author(s) : WINANDY E., HUNDY G.
Summary
In this paper, the modulated compressor known as "digital scroll" is first described. The working process is detailed and the different mechanical alternatives to perform PWM modulation developed. It is then described how in combination with vapour injection it can give unparalleled efficiency with full modulation capability. Capacity controlled scrolls can now be applied with R404A, R407C and R410A, making them suitable for refrigeration, chiller, VRF and heating applications. In particular, refrigeration applications with R404A have demonstrated the energy efficiency benefits of controlling the evaporator pressure to plus or minus 0.5 K. Case studies are provided. Combined with vapour injection, which continues to be effective at reduced capacity, this offers the best possible energy efficiency.
