Summary

The paper presents an overview on the refrigerants in use, the policy to phase out ozone depleting substances and a prospective of the use of hydrocarbons and ammonia in Argentina. A cooperation program between the National Institute of Industrial Technology and the industry to develop basic engineering and safety recommendations for the reconversion of CFC-12 appliances to hydrocarbons is presented. Technology problems to be solved and barriers for a broader use of hydrocarbons are presented. For ammonia, the current situation and the national regulations for use of this refrigerant in different applications are presented.
