Assessment of 20' refrigerated containers for in-transit cold-disinfestation of citrus fruit.

Author(s) : AMOS N. D., SHARP A. K.

Summary

In-transit cold-disinfestation in containers approved by certain countries (including USA and Japan) as a quarantine treatment to ensure imported fruits are free of pests such as fruit fly. Because of the stringent temperature control requirements, however, only certain series of containers can be used. The work evaluated design characteristics of 20' refrigerated containers in current use, from which 8 were selected for testing to assess whether they were capable of meeting the current Japanese protocol for Australian citrus fruit (16 days below +1.0 °C). The good characteristics are listed.
