Summary
This study investigates the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative natural refrigerant to R22. A computer model that compares the performance of propane-butane mixture as refrigerants with that of conventional synthetic refrigerants has been developed. In the present study, the model is used to compare LPG with R22 on the basis of 1.0 kilowatt of refrigeration capacity and different values of the evaporating and condensing temperatures. The paper also reports the results of an experimental test in which R22 was replaced with LPG in a window air conditioner. The test showed that the performance of LPG was comparable to that of R22, but it gives a higher temperature at the compressor discharge.
