Atmosphere modification in transit to enhance deciduous fruit storage life.

Summary

Shipping trials with several types of controlled atmosphere systems built into refrigerated shipping containers were conducted over two growing seasons. Plums, pears and apples were all stored for several periods under controlled atmosphere. The fruit was examined on arrival in the market place for out-turn condition and further storage and shelf-life tests conducted. The arrival condition of the apples, pears and plums held under atmosphere was always much better than the controls shipped under regular atmosphere. The benefits to shippers and marketeers of deciduous fruit are discussed.
