Capacitance level probes for refrigerants.

Summary
The author points out the ease of level control expansion devices for new refrigerants for which thermostatic expansion valves may not have been designed. Where a mechanical float control can cover only a small level range, capacitance level probes can cover wide ranges and operating levels can be adjusted. Operation depends on the difference in capacitance between the probe and the vessel side through liquid and through vapour. A single probe system can produce signals for alarms. Level accuracy can normally be measured within a few percent. Changes in settings can be made. Remote displays can give percentage levels or simulated visual indications. Small controllers are available for commercial installations. These can operate on 0 to 5 volts to suit the microprocessors normally used. D.W.H.
