Capacity credit calculation for exchanger tube rupture.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The ASME code on relieving devices for heat exchange tube rupture is not specific on the calculation of relieving capacity. The relieved stream from a high pressure tube rupture will normally vent to the lower pressure side of the tube. From here relief is probably available through the low pressure circuit -often a cooling water circuit -in which case relief to atmosphere or equivalent through a pressure relief device would be required only for that not accommodated without a pressure rise to above maximum allowable working pressure in the water circuit. The author gives an example of such an evaluation and indicates the assumptions under which it is calculated. D.W.H.
