Carbon dioxide as a refrigerant for railway refrigeration and air conditioning.
Author(s) : QUACK H., KRAUS W. E.
Summary
CO2 is a safe, cheap and readily available refrigerant. Its application has so far been limited by the fact that operation at relatively high pressures is needed and that working above the critical pressure is somewhat unusual in normal refrigeration applications. On the other hand, there is a broad and growing use of supercritical CO2 in chemical engineering systems. Thermodynamic analysis shows that CO2 cycles with two-stage compression have plant efficiencies comparable to those of other refrigerants. The excellent heat transfer properties of CO2 makes compact designs possible, at least on the refrigerant side.
