Summary

Carbon dioxide (CO2) as a working fluid in refrigeration gains importance in the context of the substitution of fluorinated refrigerants. However, up to now applications for CO2 refrigeration are mainly limited to cooling capacities larger than 3 kW. The presentation describes the application of carbon dioxide as a refrigerant (R-744) in small cooling devices like laboratory equipment and cooling capacities less than 2 kW. Taking the example of two laboratory equipments successful retrofits of refrigeration circuits with smaller cooling capacity are shown. In addition to the design solutions for evaporator injection hot gas injection for the carbon dioxide application is proposed. The chosen device components are based both on components available on the market and prototypes. In comparison temperature characteristics and energy consumption of the devices under different boundary conditions are given for both the retrofits and the corresponding serial models. This paper deals with practical examples of the replacement of fluorinated hydro carbons with high global warming potential by carbon dioxide in small cooling devices.
