Summary

DIAGRAMS OF THE PHYSICAL STATES OF WATER-GLYCEROL AND WATER-1,2-PROPANEDIOL SYSTEMS WERE STUDIED IN THE TEMPERATURE RANGE FROM 77 TO 273 K (-196 TO 0 DEG C). A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE NATURE OF CRYSTALLIZATION AND THE EXTENT OFRED BLOOD CELL INJURY AT LOW TEMPERATURES WAS ESTABLISHED. THERMOMECHANICAL STRESSES WERE SHOWN TO CONTRIBUTE TO CELL INJURY IN THE PROCESS OF RAPID THAWING.
