Summary
The paper shows three very different, possible outcomes for the transition from R11 to R123 without hardware adjustment. In general, alternate refrigerant drop-in without compressor modifications causes an unacceptable reduction in capacity and efficiency. It is often possible to maintain original capacity and efficiency with a new refrigerant through relatively minor changes of a few internal aerodynamic parts, such as diffuser and return channel, without modification of the mechanical drive train or the compressor base.
