Summary

The theoretical performances of some hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCRs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and hydrofluorinated ethers (HFEs) have been assessed as alternatives to R11. From this comparative analysis, it is evident that R11 is the best thermodynamically efficient fluid and R123 is the fluid which offers features close to R11. A brief review of the current status of R123, wich is currently accepted as an interim substitute for R11, is also presented. Among HFCs assessed, R245ca offers reasonable Rankine COP values. R143 is the best fluorinated ether. Perhaps R143 may be suitable for the lower range of cooling capacities currently covered by R11.
