Summary

In the UK an existing course on safe handling of CFCs is run under the suspices of the Construction Industry Training Board. This however is of only one day duration and the candidate does not actually carry out practical tasks himself. A new certification has been introduced by the City & Guilds of London Institute, no.2077: Handling refrigerants. There is no set course and many experienced technicians may obtain the 100% pass mark required with no further training. The full certificate requires the candidate to demonstrate a skill in refrigerant charging and refrigerant recovery including for blends of CFC/HCFC/HFA refrigerants. Assessment centres must be approved and frequently checked by the City & Guilds. Such certification could form the basis of UK legislation. D.W.H.
