CFCs Substitutes: new threats for the ozone layer and global warming. The greenpeace campaign.

Author(s) : NOVELLI I.

Summary

More than ten years have passed since the international scientific community came to a consensus on the threat to the ozone layer posed by CFCs, and the market now offers feasible alternatives, but CFC production still continues. This mistake must not be repeated with HCFCs and HFCs; the ozone layer is also vulnerable to HCFCs, while HFCs are powerful greenhouse gases. Short-sighted industrial operators who take a wait-and-see stance on environmental problems, or try to impede environmentally-friendly legislation, are fated to be outdistanced by companies more attentive to "green" consumer demands. They would be better advised to follow the example of the German industries that have led the way in replacing HFCs with less harmful substances.
