Summary

SEED-TUBERS OF THE CULTIVARS MANTIQUEIRA AND BINTJE WERE STORED IN DARK CHAMBERS AT 278, 283, 293 K (5, 10, 20 DEG C) + OR -1 K AND AT ROOM TEMPERATURE: 291 TO 300 K (18 TO 27 DEG C) FOR 154 DAYS. STARCH, TOTAL SOLUBLE SUGARS, AND REDUCING SUGAR LEVELS WERE DETERMINED. STARCH CONTENT DECREASED IN RELATION TO TIME AT ALL TEMPERATURES. THIS REDUCTION WAS MORE SHARPLY PRONOUNCED AT 278 K IN BOTH CULTIVARS. HOWEVER, AT 278 K THERE WAS A CONCOMITANT INCREASE IN TOTAL SOLUBLE SUGARS AND REDUCING SUGARS.
