Characterization of CO2 hydrate formation.

Author(s) : JERBI S., DELAHAYE A., FOURNAISON L., et al.

Summary

CO2 hydrate slurries are interesting because hydrates have a high latent heat of fusion and can be formed under positive temperature conditions adapted to air-conditioning applications. Furthermore, hydrates can be generated by CO2 injection in a cooled aqueous solution, avoiding the use of mechanical processes which are often power-limited. Nevertheless, the knowledge of the hydrate formation kinetics is necessary for the design of a pilot loop. First of all, the literature concerning the kinetics of hydrate formation relates principally to natural gas hydrates. Only few studies are dedicated to CO2 hydrates. As pointed out by authors, the induction time, before hydrate nucleation, can be strongly reduce with cold and already used water and with stirring action. In the case of CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, the results depend on the system used: semi-batch or loop. Moreover, we show in our experimental loop that the hydrate growth rate is increased by a factor of 1.5 due to the presence of additives. Finally, the results of this first kinetic approach will be useful to design a new circulation loop containing CO2 hydrate slurry.
