Summary

CO2 hydrates are obtained by the combination of water and CO2 (gas) under suitable temperature and pressure conditions. CO2 hydrate slurry is one of the recently developed secondary refrigerants in order to phase out CFCs and HCFCs. CO2 hydrate slurry is suitable for cooling applications, because its melting point is adjustable by changing the production conditions and can be applied to the positive temperature range (2 to 7°C), which are temperatures required in air-conditioning systems. Pure CO2 hydrate has a dissociation enthalpy of 500 kJ/kg of water and is 1.5 times higher than that of ice crystal formation. CO2 hydrate slurry also displays excellent pumpability due to its low viscosity even at very high energy density. This paper reports a study carried out to characterise this type of phase change coolant.
