Characterization of intraembryonic freezing in Anopheles gambiae embryos.

Summary

Malaria, a human disease caused by the Plasmodium parasite and transmitted by the mosquito Anopheles, kills somewhere between 1 and 2 million people annually. Much current malaria research focuses on the genetics of Anopheles in an effort to create transgenic strains of Anopheles gambiae that block the Plasmodium. Since the present study shows that intraembryonic ice does not occur in Anopheles over a 4 hour period at -20 deg C, it will be possible to determine the kinetics of chill injury down to that temperature.
