CO2: a chance for once-through heat pump heaters.

Summary

To investigate this cycle in detail, the steady-state design model HPSIM has been developed. With the model heat pump water heaters with heating capacities of about 20 kilowatts have been simulated. The differences compared with conventional units are a result of the high CO2 operating pressure: the volumetric heating capacity is (due to the high density) extremely large and results in small tube diameters. An internal heat exchanger can be helpful. First results show that once-through heat pump water heaters with inlet temperatures of 10 deg C and supply temperature of 60 deg C can achieve COPs of higher than 5.
