Summary

To avoid future problems with the growing number of new synthetic refrigerants available, natural refrigerants should be preferred. For commercial refrigeration, the combination of propane in a central plant with a secondary refrigerant for chilling conditions and a cascade with CO2 for freezing conditions offers efficient solutions. The CO2 compression cycle promises better energy efficiency of hot water heat pumps operating with large temperature differences. Demonstration systems were realized in cooperation with related industries.
