Summary
Almost all coaches are equipped with some kind of climate control system. The current air-conditioning systems are based on vapour-compression cooling. In these systems, a mechanical compressor is used and draws its operating power directly from the engine. Consequently the power available to the drive system is reduced. Simultaneously, only thirty to forty percent of the available fuel energy is converted into mechanical energy to drive the coach and power the accessories such as the air-conditioning system. The rest of the fuel energy is discharged as waste heat. This means that it seems logical to replace the vapour-compression cooling system by a waste heat driven sorption system. This idea is not new. Various authors have proposed variants of the same concept over the past twenty years. Nevertheless, sorption-based automotive air conditioning systems are still not common. However, the reasons for changing to waste heat driven air-conditioning systems are getting more urgent. The obvious waste heat sources are the cooling water circuit and the exhaust gases.
