Summary

THE MAIN REQUIREMENTS OF COLD STORES INCLUDE PLANNING, AND PROVISION SHOULD BE MADE TO STORE BETWEEN 50 AND 70% OF THE CROP WITH A DAILY INTAKE OF 7/10% OF STORE CAPACITY. 4.25 M3 IS REQUIRED FOR EVERY TON OF APPLES IN CARTONS ON PALLETS AND 2.26 M3 FOR APPLES IN BINS. THE STRUCTURE OF THE STORE SHOULD INCLUDE PROPER VAPOUR BARRIERS AND INSULATION OF THE ROOF SHOULD BE 50% GREATER THAN WALLS. AIR LEAKAGE SHOULD BE AVOIDED. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS AMMONIA REFRIGERATION PLANT AS BEING MORE EFFICIENT AND GIVING HIGHER STORE HUMIDITIES WITH APPROPRIATE COOLER DESIGN. AN RH OF 90%, A TEMPERATURE RANGE IN THE STORE OF 274 K (1 DEG C) AND AN AIR CIRCULATION RATE OF 30-40 TIMES THE EMPTY VOLUME OF STORE ARE RECOMMENDED. G.R.S.
