Summary

The article first presents the arguments for cold storage in Africa, including the considerable losses of perishable foodstuffs, growth in urban populations, difficulties in food distribution, seasonal problems, intestinal illnesses and food poisoning. The article then reviews current cold storage in developing countries, with a discussion of plant design, the refrigerants used, insulation, and problems in maintenance. The author makes some recommendations for cold stores, including better sealing, reduced refrigerant charge and programmed maintenance, while stressing the special factors encountered in developing countries, for example, the high condensing temperatures.
