Commercial refrigeration with ammonia and CO2 as working fluids.

Author(s) : IEA HPC, EGGEN G., ROSVIK S.

Summary

Within commercial refrigeration, a secondary refrigerant circuit within a supermarket may use CO2 as a volatile fluid, while ammonia is used as primary refrigerant at the refrigerating plant outside the public areas of the supermarket. CO2 may also be used as low temperature refrigerant together with ammonia in a cascade refrigeration plant. Compared to traditional refrigerants and brines, carbon dioxide offers a number of advantages: reduced pumping power due to lower volume flow, reduced tube dimensions due to latent heat, more efficient heat exchangers, i.e. smaller and less expensive units, smaller compressor swept volume due to higher volumetric refrigeration capacity.
