Use of ammonia-CO2-water in refrigerated display cases for supermarkets.

Anvendelse af ammonia-CO2-water til køle-/frysemøbler i supermarkeder.

Author(s) : KAUFFELD M.

Summary

Many parallel-coupled refrigeration installations presently installed in supermarkets are using R134a or R404A. Due to the use of chemical refrigerants with a relatively high greenhouse effect, the parallel-coupled plants will probably not be seen as environment-friendly in the future. A possible solution could be a combination of ammonia as refrigerant in the machine room and cooling distribution using evaporating CO2 or melting eutectics. Preliminary calculations show that plants of this kind are able to compete with actual parallel coupled installations seen both from the energy consumption and running costs points of view. The use of ice/water mixtures enables to further enhance economical benefits by cold accumulation. The author concludes that there are good possibilities to establish refrigeration installations for supermarkets using natural refrigerants.
