Summary

Measurements for a comparative study of room temperatures in non-air-conditioned offices with window-ventilation were made during a stable warm period in the summer when 1) an external sun barrier and untinted windowglass were present; and 2) when a reflective glass in combination with anti-glare treatment was present. Calculations were made of the resulting cooling loads, inclusive internal loads, as well as the observed or achievable air exchange rates necessary to limiting room temperature to a maximum of 26 deg C, when the offices were aired out during the night. The frequency with which the limit was exceeded was recorded together with relevant data on cooling loads and the compass direction of the building's exposure. Conclusions yielded by the data underscore the importance of sun barrier devices and window ventilation in controlling room temperature. Reference is made to DIN 4108 and to its stipulations on total energy permeability and to relevant environmental guidelines for the workplace.
