Summary

The cooling needs of a computer room and research center were calculated to be 500 kilowatts. An R123 turbo compressor was selected over an ammonia screw compressor. At 500 kilowatts ammonia was found to produce more CO2 than R123. Moreover, turbocompressors using ammonia are not economical until one reaches a much higher capacity. The R123 turbocompressor also had a higher COP during partial load operation. Ammonia, R123 and R22 were compared for direct and indirect influence on the greenhouse effect.
