Comparison of automotive air-conditioning systems operating with CO2 and R134a.

Author(s) : PREISSNER M., CUTLER B., SINGANAMALLA S., et al.

Summary

Both systems are equipped with an evaporator and a condenser/gas cooler of comparable size, and a suction line heat exchanger is utilized. The system is fitted with variable size expansion devices. Measurements have been carried out over a typical range of outdoor temperatures (25 to 45 °C) for idling and driving conditions (1000 and 1800 RPM). The capacity of the CO2 system ranges from 13% lower to 20% higher, whereas the COP is 11 to 23% lower. Further improvements are needed to increase the CO2 performances.
