Comparison of the DC performance of various Nb3Sn strands used in cable-in-conduit conductors for fusion.

Author(s) : WESCHE R., ROTH F., BRUZZONE P.

Summary

As a basis for the comparison of Nb3Sn strand and cable-in-conduit conductor properties, the critical current of eight Nb3Sn strands, supplied by different companies, was measured on Ti-Al-V barrels at 4.2 K. The measured critical current densities at 4.2 K and 12 T are in the range of 709 to 1368 A/mm2. Using Kramer plots the upper critical fields at 4.2 K and the strain, experienced by the Nb3Sn filaments for measurements on the ITER barrels, were determined. The values of the upper critical fields are between 21.90 and 30.76 T at 4.2 K. For two of these strands, the temperature dependence of the critical current is presented. By means of the Kramer plots and the Summers scaling relations the consistency of the measured temperature dependence of the critical current can be proved.
