Overall critical current density of Chevrel wires in magnetic fields up to 24 tesla.

Summary

Wires of lead(0.6)-tin(0.4)-molybdenum(6)-sulphur(8) with a protective sheet of niobium have been carefully drawn and the critical current density has been measured on small coils in magnetic fields up to 24 T. At 1.9 K, the overall critical current density exceeds 100 A/mm2 at 20 T and 60 A/mm2 at 24 T.
