Concept and design of an LH₂ tank test rig and its research potential.

Number: 0086

Author(s) : JUST T., HABERSTROH C.

Summary

In aviation or automotive applications liquid hydrogen (LH2) is widely seen as a promising alternative to carbon-based fossil fuels. Thus, mobile onboard LH2 dewar vessels are needed. One of the concerns is to minimize the inevitable self-pressurization due to heat inleak into the cryogenic system. Moreover, developing thermal stratification within the vessel plays an important role. Details of this thermal behaviour and of the temperature distribution inside the two-phase fluid are not fully understood yet. Therefore, a highly customisable LH2 cryostat is being set up at TUD Dresden University of Technology, serving as a substitute LH2 tank, and equipped with respective instrumentation. The test rig and its major design features are presented. Furthermore, the potential for future research, enabled by this test rig, is outlined.
