CONDITIONS FOR THE STORAGE OF WHOLE BLOOD TO MAINTAIN THE HEMOGLOBIN OXYGEN DISSOCIATION CURVE (ODC).

Summary

THE HEMOGLOBIN ODC DETERIORATES RAPIDLY IN BLOOD STORED UNDER CONVENTIONAL BLOOD BANK CONDITIONS PROBABLY BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF SEVERAL COMPONENTS OF THE INTRACELLULAR PHOSPHATE POOL. THE AUTHORS APPROACH HAS BEEN TO ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP STORAGE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE INTEGRITY OF THE ODC IN WHOLE BLOOD IS MAINTAINED. BLOOD STORED IN OTHER CONTAINERS AND/OR AT DIFFERENT TEMPERATURES RESULTS IN THE EXPECTED, RAPID DETERIORATION OF THE HEMOGLOBIN ODC. DATA WILL BE PRESENTED WHICH SUGGESTS THAT THE IMPORTANT "PARAMETER" IN MICRO-HEMATOCRIT TUBES WHICH MAINTAINS THE ODC IS THE SMALL SURFACE AREA BETWEEN SEDIMENTED CELLS AND PLASMA.
