Controlled atmosphere storage of the pomerac.

Author(s) : SANKAT C. K., BASANTA A.

Summary

The pomerac, botanically identified as Syzygium malaccense, is also called the French cashew, Malay, Malacca or Otaheite apple. This fruit is brilliant red in appearance with a crisp texture and a mildly sweet flavour. Previous research has shown that the pomerac is a non-climacteric fruit and may be satisfactorily kept in refrigerated storage at 5 °C for 20 days. The response of the pomerac to CA storage conditions at 5 °C of 1% O2 and 5, 8, 11 and 14% CO2 was investigated in storage trial lasting 30 days. Quality of fruits was evaluated, taking into account weight losses, firmness, colour, sugar, content, and total soluble content. CA storage of the pomerac has considerable possibilities for the maintenance of fruit quality.
