Summary

The Dutch authorities are making an attempt to reduce the use of fresh ground water for low priority applications, such as through-flow cooling, for both environmental considerations and to avoid a scarcity of drinking water. Industrial ground water consumption must therefore be decreased by 40% by the year 2000. In order to achieve this target, industry will in all probability have to pay a tax of 17 cents for each cubic metre of ground water they remove, starting 1 January 1995. Industry therefore has every interest in decreasing the consumption of ground water, e.g. by using less cooling water. The article describes the options available.
