Summary

In a physics laboratory of condensed matter some phenomena, such as phase transitions (structural, magnetic, electronic), can only be observed at temperatures close to absolute 0 K. This paper present four solutions for cryogenic refrigeration for temperatures ranging from 4 K down to a few micro, or even nano kelvin: vacuum boiling of liquid helium, adiabatic demagnetization. Achievable temperatures are given for each technology and continuous or batch operation is discussed. Operating constraints are also mentioned; even if some of these systems are now commercially available, operation requires attention and know how, mostly because the available, or useful, cooling capacity is quite low, compared to heat losses at these ultimate low temperatures.
