Cryogenic fluid dynamics and its applications today.
Number: pap. n. 67
Author(s) : SCURLOCK R. G.
Summary
Cryogenic Fluid Dynamics, CryoFD, uses basic properties of cryogenic fluids, their natural convective motions and their extra-ordinary heat transfer properties at low temperatures, to design thermally efficient cryogenic systems with minimum boil-off and use of refrigeration power. CryoFD is therefore an important tool today, which is able to reduce the running costs of very many cryogenic systems. CryoFD did not exist 50 years ago, and its importance has grown largely through a long series of experimental studies carried out by teams of postgraduate students and research staff at Southampton University. The paper will describe the collection of discoveries from these studies, which enable CryoFD to be used with confidence in the design, and retro-design, of systems, with an impact on running costs. This is helping to establish the continued practicality of cryogenic applications, in the face of increasing costs and reducing availability of helium as a coolant. The paper will discuss the design of a number of examples, including: (1) Almost doubling the condensing power of cryocoolers, retrospectively, without changing the mechanical design; (2) Developing the thermal efficiency of the 15 kA current leads for the LHC superconducting magnets; (3) Applying the use of isochoric storage under pressure of LNG as a green fuel, without fear of rollover; (4) Extending the storage time of liquid helium from 6 months to over a year at The Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, thereby enabling all-year-round use of liquid helium cooled experiments.
